Skanska USA Civil was awarded a $66 million project to expand the Atlanta-Fulton County Water Treatment Plant in Alpharetta, GA. Operated by the Atlanta-Fulton County Water Resources Commission (AFCWRC), the Atlanta-Fulton County Water Treatment plant provides potable water to the residents of North Fulton County, GA and the City of Atlanta, GA.
This contract expanded the existing reservoir by 450 million-gallons and required a plant upgrade, modification to raw water intake pump station and expansion the high service pump station. The scope of work for this project consisted of installing equipment that will provide increased raw water pumping, conveyance, and off stream storage capacity as well as increased filter backwash. The project team was also responsible for installation of machinery required for the water treatment plant, upgrades to the security system, finished water pumping capacity, and building improvements.
Improvements to the raw water pump station were included in the contract, those improvements included adding additional intake screens, sand eductors, and raw water pumps. A parallel 54-inch ductile iron pipe raw water main between the raw water pump station and the existing reservoir was also constructed, as was a new raw water reservoir with a capacity of approximately 640 million gallons.
Security upgrades to the facility included enclosing the tool storage area of the maintenance building; enclosing the office area of the assistant general manager along with the patio area under the administration building, which was converted for use as a meeting / training room. |
