| | Rt. 10 Over Appomattox River | | Because the new bridge had to be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge, great care was given to assure that no damage was done to the existing structure and that traffic delays were minimized. Access to the work was achieved utilizing both barge-mounted cranes and non-credible earthen causeways. The work also included the installation of a Timber Pile Fender System. Stone columns were installed to stabilize the bridge approaches.
The bridge was constructed on 24" square precast concrete pile caps and hammer head concrete caps. The superstructure consisted of Type V and VI ASSHTO girders with stay-in-place metal forms and a cast-in-place deck.
