Berkley Bridge The work included construction of a double leaf bascule bridge over the Elizabeth River as well as a major interchange of bridges on land.  The project included the construction of two cast-in-place concrete bascule piers, driving piles up to 24 inch square, setting large precast concrete girders, erection of large structural steel girders, and the setting of preassembled structural steel bascule leafs which weighed approximately 650 tons each.  In addition, the project involved the installation of the required machinery and controls for the movable bascule leafs, modifications of the existing bascule leafs and the replacement of the existing bridge deck.  The rehabilitation of the existing bridge required post tensioning the existing girders to support a wide roadway.
