| | Chowan River Bridge |  | | This project consisted of 2.88 kilometers of bridge on Rt. 17 over the Chowan River. The bridge structure consisted of four travel lanes with a vertical main channel clearance of 40.1M. The substructure construction consisted of pile supported trestle bent caps for the low level bridge approaches. The high level bridge substructure consisted of pile supported low water pier foundations with columns and caps. The pier footings were mass concrete pours. The superstructure for the three main spans consisted of structural steel girders and cast-in-place, lightweight concrete decks.
