This contract with the joint venture of Kiewit Construction Company and Tidewater Skanska Inc. replaced an old toll bridge with a new 65' high-level bridge. Also the contract included the demolition of the old bridge and construction of a fishing pier. On behalf of the joint venture, Tidewater Skanska prepared the pile-driving rig for deployment to Ocean City. The work included beefing up a barge internally and externally to support a Manitowoc 4100 crane on a ringer. Steel and wood grillage was placed on the deck of the barge to support the ringer that was purchased by the joint venture.
In addition to the Manitowoc 4100 crane, pile driving leads, deck engines, compressors, jets, augers and an A-frame structure were all prepared and placed on the barge. The work was complex and intensive as the equipment and material arrived from all over the country. Tidewater was flexible and adaptable in dealing with the changing requirements in order to get the equipment and the test piles on site to begin driving piles in January 2000. The overall contract schedule called for completion in 38 months.
