Smith Creek Parkway

In April 2001, Tidewater Skanska was awarded this project by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to construct the third phase of the Smith Creek Parkway.  The project consists of 12 structures and approximately 2500 meters of roadway that will complete the Parkway from downtown Wilmington to US 117 north of the city.  The segment of the parkway currently under construction will include 11 bridges.  Two of these bridges will traverse Smith Creek.

Structure 1 is the existing Isabel Holmes Bridge across the Cape Fear River.  Work on this structure includes partial removal of the bridge, widening the bridge to accommodate the on and off ramps to Smith Creek Parkway, and a latex overlay of the bridge.  Structure 2 is the on ramp from Smith Creek Parkway to the Isabel Holmes Bridge.  Structures 3 and 4 are the off ramps from the bridge to Smith Creek Parkway and Third Street.  Structure 5 is a small flyover bridge carrying the Parkway over the CSX Railroad.  Structure 6 is a special approach slab between Structures 5 and 7, which is another small flyover bridge over the Structure 3 Ramp.

Structures 8 and 9 carry Smith Creek Parkway over the CSX Railroad, the wetlands and Smith Creek.  The 935-meter long side-by-side bridges are completely new construction and form the left and right lanes of the Parkway with Structure 8 traveling out of town and Structure 9 traveling into downtown.  Structure 10 is an on ramp from McRae Street (Structure 12) to Structure 8 and Structure 11 an off ramp from Structure 9 to McRae Street.  The work for Structure 12 consists of removing 250 meters of the existing McRae Street and replacing it with a bridge.
