US 17 Elizabeth City By-pass

The Bypass, which cuts through Tangle Wood Farms in a section called "The Desert", is one of a series of North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) projects to improve the heavily traveled US Highway 17 corridor through the coastal plain of North Carolina from Virginia to South Carolina.

Under subcontract to Barnhill Contracting, Inc., Tidewater Skanska Inc. is to construct 7 bridges linking the Bypass to Route 17.  The geographical size of the project is over 10 miles, which poses logistical challenges to Tidewater.  NCDOT is overseeing the project from two residencies, one South of Elizabeth City and one North of Elizabeth City.

The extended duration of the project is in part due to the long settlement periods for the bridge approach fills.
