Richmond San Rafael Bridge 
Skanska USA Civil subsidiaries, Tidewater Skanska and Koch Skanska, are partners on Richmond-San Rafael Seismic Retrofit Project. At the time of the award, this was the largest contract every awarded by Caltrans. The seismic retrofit for this 4 miles long bridge is an extremely complicated project involving the retrofit of the bridge’s steel structure, and foundations.
The extensive structural steel retrofit adds over thirty one million pounds of steel to the existing structure, including the strengthening of the bridge’s truss components and tower legs, the installation of special moment resisting pier frames, the installation of seismic isolation bearings, viscous dampers, and seismic restrainers.
The bridge foundation retrofit entails extremely complicated underwater operations including the installation of pre-cast concrete jackets around the existing piers, the installation of new precast pile cap foundations, and cast-in-place piles at the bridge towers, and the installation of steel casing at the existing bell foundations.
