Having previously constructed the existing Container Ship Berths, Tidewater Skanska was contracted in June 1986 to construct Container Berth No. 4 and related facilities at the Norfolk International Terminals. This new berth was part of a $33M expansion of the terminal in order to handle an every increasing number of container shipments through the Port of Norfolk. This project was divided into three phases. The first 330 feet of berth required completion by December, 1986 to accommodate two new cranes that were to be used to load and unload ships. The second phase required 850 feet of new berth by June, 1987 to accommodate a third crane. The final phase completed the remaining berth footage resulting in a new berth 120' wide and 1,540' long. Almost 1,200 twenty-inch square concrete piles were drove and over 13,000 cubic yards of concrete placed to meet the demanding schedule. |
