| | NIT North Expansion - Phase II | | | In September of 1996, the Virginia Port Authority awarded Tidewater Skanska a contract to construct a new 1,508-foot marginal wharf at the north end of Norfolk International Terminals to further expand the port's container handling capacity. Although similar in size to the previously constructed Container Berth 4, several improvements were made to the design and methods utilized to construct the new structure. In order to support the new generation of Panamamax class container vessels, the North Wharf was designed to accommodate a 50-foot water depth. 1,595 twenty-inch square concrete piles ranging in length from 65 to 103 feet were driven to support the new structure. Through innovative construction techniques, pile installation was completed nearly six months ahead of schedule. | | Client: Virginia Port Authority | | Location: Norfolk, VA | | Contract Value: $17,780,760 | | Duration: 31 Months | | Further Information: Tidewater Skanska, Inc 809 South Military Highway Virginia Beach, VA 23464 Phone 757 420 4140 Fax 757 420 3551 |
