This project was the expansion of the Naval Weapons Station Ammunition Pier at Yorktown, VA and constructed for the Atlantic Division of the Naval Facilities Command. The project consisted of the driving of 800 18" concrete piles ranging from 75 linear feet to 110 linear feet, widening the pier deck approximately 52 feet to match the north end of the pier, installing new track rail and crane rail, and replacing the existing fire line piping system. Portions of the pier deck were constructed using prestressed deck slabs that were engineered and supplied along with the prestressed piles by Bayshore Concrete Products Corporation, a subsidiary of Tidewater Skanska. During initial pile driving operations, Tidewater noticed that the section of the pier to be widened was beginning to move away from the new piles being driven. A careful monitoring system was immediately established in cooperation with the Navy's Resident Office in Charge of Construction and the consulting engineers under contract to the Navy. A pile driving and soil investigative program was conducted, and through the cooperation of the owner, consultants and the prime contractor, a solution that involved dredging the basin side overburden was implemented that successfully arrested the movement of the existing pier. With the pier movement problem solved, the project proceeded on schedule and another project completed within budget and on time with the highest standard of quality. As a result of Tidewater's effort on this project, and through continued cooperation over the past years, the Department of the Navy recognized the company by including it in the Triple A Contractor Program. Contractors that are a part of this program are selected by the U.S. Navy for negotiated and emergency projects. This award was presented to the company by Rear Admiral J.C. Doebler. |
