Melrose Street Grade Separation Project
Skanska USA Civil was awarded this project from the city of Placentia for the Melrose Street Grade Separation. The assignment is part of the Orangethorpe Avenue Grade Separation and Trade Corridor project, which was initiated by OnTrac a joint powers authority headed by the City of Placentia also including Anaheim, Fullerton and Yorba Linda.

The Orangethorpe Project created a series of street underpasses and movement of five miles of railroad tracks in order to completely separate rail and vehicular traffic and eliminate congestion at major highways and street-level rail crossings. More than 1/3 of the nation's international trade cargo flows through California by train. That number is expected to increase in the future, which will result in more train traffic through this region.

The scope of work on the project included construction of a two span pre-cast girder railroad bridge, realignment of Melrose Street, utility improvements, concrete retaining walls with architectural treatments and installation of new street lights.

Establishing a round-the-clock quiet zone within the city limits was a top priority for city officials who required that steps be taken to minimize the potential impact of construction on local business and residents in the area. Activities were only allowed from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, pedestrian walkways were required around work areas and sections of work had to be completed prior to closing other areas in order to maintain traffic flow and access.

The undertaking will eliminate traffic delays at rail crossings, reduce air emissions, improve traffic circulation and emergency and law enforcement response times. The project will also enhance the value of adjacent properties that would otherwise be of limited value by making them accessible.
