M.D. Anderson Cancer Center

Brief Overview

MD Anderson Cancer CenterSkanska provided construction management services for the 220,000 SF state of the art M.D. Anderson Cancer Center – Orlando, built on the campus of Orlando Regional Medical Center.  It is ten stories high consisting of three floors and 35 areas of outpatient care, a one-floor conference and administration center, one floor of mechanical space, two floors of inpatient care and capability for three more inpatient floors.  Construction duration was 35 months.

Design features include a new main entrance with a set of monumental stairs welcoming the community; enhanced patient and visitor access; café; outdoor meditation garden and landscaped terraces.  "Beyond supporting the technology needed to combat cancer, we designed this center with the emotional needs of our patients in mind," says Clarence Brown, M.D., president and CEO of the center.  The design allows for a "one stop shop" for cancer care.  The facility was built so that the flagship hospital ORMC and the Ambulatory Care Center are connected.  Allowing for significant reduction of duplication of patient services, creating a consumer friendly environment.

M.D. Anderson is among the first sites in the United States to offer the advanced radiosurgery technology of Novalis "Shaped Beam Surgery" and Helical Tomotherapy.  Both deliver a precise amount of radiation to shrink or control the growth of a tumor without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.
