Rehabilitation of Lexington/Third Avenue IND Station at 53rd Street

Underpinning & Foundation Skanska were awarded a contract by Slattery Skanska on this challenging undertaking. The focal point of this project was that the work had to be performed underground in extremely tight constraints.

Underpinning constructed secant pile walls to create the support of excavation for the elevator and escalator shafts. This was done from below the street level with a modified low headroom Bauer BG 18.

To speed up production, a second Bauer drill rig was used to install the piles that did not have any obstruction straight down from the street. The Bauer BG 22H was used above ground where small 4’x8’ sections of the decking system were removed, one at

a time. This allowed the machine to lower the drill bit and sections below the street, as far as 30 feet, before drilling began.

Because of the station’s close proximity to businesses, precise planning and scheduling was key to Underpinning’s successful completion of their portion of this project.
