| | North River Tunnels Ventilation Facility |
Slattery Skanska and joint-venture partner Gottlieb Skanska, were awarded a $25 million contract by Amtrak to reconstruct and upgrade existing shaft facilities serving the two North River Tunnels at Weehawken, NJ.
The existing ventilation facilities were replaced to provide improved safety to the tunnels in the event of a fire.
The project team constructed a new 100-foot-high (50' above ground) reinforced concrete ventilation structure that houses four-500 HP, 265,000 CFM axial emergency ventilation fans. A new, one-story 13,200 volt sub-station was also constructed. The contract included demolition of five existing structures as well as excavating to the top of the tunnel roof. It was necessary to temporarily relocate electrical and mechanical sump pump discharge lines in order to demolish the existing ventilation shafts, access stairs and utility shafts. Rehabilitation of the facility included construction of concrete exterior walls, interior beams and supported slabs, cast-in-place stairs to grade level and a 50'-high steel framed masonry building. Installation of new electrical and mechanical systems including ventilation fans, pump discharge lines, fire lines, storm water lift station and a standby diesel generator was also part of the contract.
Work was performed in an extremely tight and confined area of 15,000 sq. feet. To add to the constraints, the site is located in a NJ Transit bus parking lot that is used constantly throughout the day.
