Corona Maintenance Shop and Car Washer Facility

Skanska USA Civil has completed this $165 million project to construct the Corona Maintenance Shop and Car Washer Facility in Queens. The facility is being built to service, clean and maintain New York City Transit’s select fleet of new railcars.

The team, which brings together the expertise of three Skanska USA Civil business units, managed the design and performed construction of the three-story, 100,000-square-foot maintenance shop and 4,600 square-foot car washer facility.

The project began with restructuring and repowering the front yard. Workers then began pile driving activities, which was followed by placement of concrete and footings to complete the foundation. The project team then began constructing the 4.600 square-foot car washer facility and steel-and-concrete maintenance building, which will house all of the sophisticated maintenance equipment and five rail tracks for servicing trains, as well as employee offices on two upper floors. Once this facility is complete the old shop will be demolished.

The team will also install all equipment for the power and signal installations and construct 12,000 linear feet of rail leading to and from the maintenance and car washer facilities as well as perform the procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of the systems.
