On a four-acre site adjacent to the existing Charles M. Poletti Generating Station, Skanska USA Civil constructed a state-of-the-art, combined-cycle power plant that adds 500 Mw to New York City's power supply.
The project team was responsible for the overall construction of the plant, including the erection of a 97,000-square-foot, two-story building to house all of the sophisticated plant equipment. The team performed the installation, testing and commissioning of all equipment including two dual-fuel Frame 7FA Combustion Turbine Generators and one D11 Steam Turbine Generator, all manufactured by General Electric. Two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) manufactured by Vogt-NEM, Inc., which both feature a 160-foot-tall steel stack were installed, tested and commissioned by Skanska USA Civil forces.
The project team performed the civil, structural and mechanical work, which in addition to the plant equipment, included installation of 110,000 linear feet of process piping, along with 500 monitoring instruments, a one-million-gallon water tank, and a 32-cell, air-cooled condenser. Skanska USA Civil managed the installation of the plant's electrical systems including a digital control system, three step-up transformers, switchgear, 1.4-million linear feet of cable, 215,000 linear feet of conduit and 26,000 linear feet of cable tray.
Because of the project's aggressive schedule, workers performed certain field activities in shifts around the clock. Skanska USA Civil business unit Underpinning & Foundation, drove approximately 2,500 steel H-piles averaging 40 feet long and drilled 37 24" and 30"caissons into rock. |
