Skanska USA Civil was a member of the joint venture that constructed this design-build project. The civil work on this $245 million design-build project for NJ Transit included construction of 9.4 miles of right-of-way, 20 miles of new track along the city streets of downtown Jersey City, erection of eight new viaduct structures, rehabilitation of existing viaducts over the right-of-way, and construction of 16 NJ Transit stations.
Due to immense size of the project’s footprint, the assignment was divided into five major work areas, with four of the areas under construction simultaneously. Skanska’s contract included utility relocation; removal of hazardous materials and existing track; and clearing, grubbing, grading and drainage of right of way sections. Concurrently, the team performed excavation, drilling, and pouring of concrete retaining walls. The final step placement of the track by Skanska’s Track Division. Earlier in the project, workers performed pile driving and placement of ground floor slabs and foundations for the 90,000-square-foot maintenance facility and car storage building, which can accommodate up to 40 light rail cars. |
