| | Rehabilitation of the Times Square Subway Complex | | | | Skanska USA Civil Northeast has completed a major project to reconstruct Times Square Subway Station, the largest and busiest in New York City Transit's immense system. The team performed activities to improve the configuration and architectural aesthetics of the station that serves as a hub for four subway lines carring 500,000 passengers on a daily basis. The most challenging component was the expansion of the 41st Street and 7th Avenue mezzanine, which required demolition and excavation of the subway roof and roadway in order to relocate and temporarily support major utilities. This was followed by the installation of a complex decking system for the purpose of allowing traffic to run smoothly while construction took place underground.
Other key elements of the contract included: extensive demolition and new construction of stairways, concrete floors, platforms, and precast glass block sidewalk panels, as well as an artistic mural. Additionally, the project team relocated fare arrays and oversaw electrical, signal and minor mechanical and plumbing work. The architectural content of the contract consists of installing ornamental metal railings and floor and wall tile installation, including several types of ornate mosaic.
One of the major aesthetic improvements was the construction of an ellipse, a vertical cut through the center of the Broadway mezzanine, which will provide passengers with a view of the multi-layered complex. An oval array of lighting on the mezzanine level will further enhance the visiual appearance of the ellipse. The 42nd Street mezzanine will be clad with a curved wall that features a decorative arrangement of Broadway show advertisements. | | | |
