Environmental responsibility

Buildings and other structures ("the built environment") consume enormous quantities of finite natural resources during the construction and operational phases. Whether it is cement in the form of concrete for the structure or fossil fuel in the form of electricity to provide energy, environmental aspects play an important part in all built environment investments throughout the whole life cycle.

For this reason, Skanska has been proactive on environmental management since 1995 and since December 2000 all our Business Units are certified/registered in accordance with ISO 14001, a construction industry first. 

A revised Environmental Policy was published in 2007. This policy focuses on four Priority Areas that breakdown into seven High Level Actions (HLAs). HLAs each have one or more Strategic Objectives (SO). Progress in achieving each SO is monitored with Key Performance Indicators using SMART Targets, the results of which are reported periodically to the Skanska Executive Team. The Skanska Environmental Performance Network reviews progress every six months and facilitates the exchange and implementation of good practices related to the HLAs.
